A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and execution of the country's major public works projects.
The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” declared the head of state.
The official announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term ended the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's economic goals for the southern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The building of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated rate, beating expectations to be partially launched before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised persistent apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an urgent pause in the building and running of all similar projects.
This stoppage was requested while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."
In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and running of these national projects.
